State Street Trees being replaced

One of the 35 year old State Street trees is removed on Wednesday along the Tennessee side of the street.  All the trees downtown were planted in cylinders to keep roots from lifting the sidewalks and the new trees are going to be planted the same way in plastic cylinders.

Safe Communities America for Sullivan County

Sullivan County Mayor Richard Venable, left, and Bristol Tennessee Mayor Jack Young sign the Safe Communities Agreement on Thursday in Kingsport, Tennessee.  Safe Communities America held a Redesignation ceremony for Sullivan County on Thursday in Kingsport, Tennessee.  In attendence were representatives from area public safety agencies, health care organizations, schools, businesses, and industry.  Sullivan County is the only community to received the award in Tennessee in addition to only 19 communities in the United States.

VDOT prepares for Snow on Wednesday

One of several plow trucks is loaded with salt on Tuesday in preparation for the upcoming snow event in Bristol, Virginia.  The VDOT North Bristol station on Reedy Creek Road was checking plows, loading trucks and getting ready to maintain the 900 lane miles of roads in their area of coverage.  Main roads like Route 58 and 19 get first treatments with sideroads after the event stops.

Abingdon Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr.

Hands were held during the singing of We Shall Overcome by those attending the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration in Abingdon, Virginia on Saturday.  The day started with a march along Main Street in Abingdon and the celebration taking place after inside Abingdon United Methodist Church.

Global Unity Exercise at YWCA

Alana Simmons, Emory & Henry College, talks to the group of adults who participated in the Global Unity Project at the YWCA in Bristol, Tennessee.  The adults would answer questions about beliefs and other similar questions and then mark their answers with a string.  At the end of the exercise patterns were discovered showing that the more different we feel we are the more we are the same.
