Goodpasture living at home with Cancer

Ruth Jerauld Hill Goodpasture gets her morning pressure taken with the Hospice Nurse Ireyda Spencer, RN while staying in her home in Bristol, VA. Her family converted this music room to her bedroom on the first floor of their house. Hospital bed, oxygen, medicines and several other items are supplied by Wellmont Hospice.

Fun in the creek at Steele Creek Park

Matt Artrip,5, took out time from swimming in the creek at Steele Creek Park on Tuesday to dry off and ride his bike. However, riding his bike in the creek did not dry him off as the water was still flying up off the wheels on his already wet shirt and shorts.

Todd Christensen, left, Executive Director, Southwest Virginia Cultural Heritage Foundation and Lu Ellsworth, center, Chariman Friends of Southwest Virginia are all smiles as Earl Gohl, Federal co-chair, Appalachian Regional Commission presents a $10,000 check on Tuesday at Heartwood in Abingdon, Virginia. With the help of a $10,000 planning grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission, Southwest Virginia is set to launch the third phase of its regional economic devel­opment effort — developing recreational and small-business assets.

Earl Gohl, ARC federal co-chair, spoke of the project as helping to create an “ecosystem” that works for development of the region’s creative economy.

“We are very pleased with the work that’s been done here,” Gohl said. “This is one more invest­ment that ARC is making in the project in SouthwestVirginia.”

The planning grant awarded Tuesday was for Friends of South­westVirginia, the financial armof the Southwest Virginia Cultural HeritageFoundation, whichover­sees Heartwood, a regional arti­san center and tourism gateway.
