Changing out the lights

Paramount Theatre of the Arts Technical Director Ken Cornett removes lightbulbs on the Paramount sign atop a 14 foot ladder on Thursday.  A successful fund raisiing campaign is now making it possible to take down the old lightbulbs, have the sign restored, starting Saturday, and replace with LED bulbs.  Cornett had taken down approx. 20 bulbs until he heard the company doing the restoration had a bucket truck and they would finish taking down bulbs.

Tractor Show in Abingdon

Ron Stevenson, President Old Glade Antique Tractor Association, shows off a Hagy wagon in Abingdon on Thursday.  The Hagy company was located in Abingdon in the 1800's and made these all wood wagons with brakes and other comforts.

Amy Looney talks about the crafts and the work that women took part in during the 1800-1900 time frame in the cabin located on the Fairview Homestead in Abingdon, Virginia.  This area is in addition to the Old Glade Antique Tractor Show this weekend.

Coal Mine Layoffs

Cornerstone Pharmacy owner Dwight Jessee fills some orders in his business in Appalachia on Tuesday.  The town has lost mining jobs over the past years and his business is having to adapt to meet their needs as well as help with insurance or lack there of and costs of medications.



Coal miner Bobby Allen is from Lee County.  Allen currently is working but is concerned about the future of the mining industry.

Dental group has been at RAM 15 years

Kaden Wilson, 5, gets his teeth cleaned from Hayley Templeton, Dental hygentist from Gate City, Virginia, during the Remote Area Medical Clinic in Wise, Virginia on Friday, July 18, 2014.  Wilson and his family got to the fairgrounds 10 am on Thursday to make sure they got to see somebody on Friday morning.  The three day clinic ends on Sunday and is expected to attract over 3,000 patients for the free medical care.  Wilson did have some cavitiies.  Templeton is part of the Mission of Mercy clinic which is part of the Virginia Dental Assoc.

Remote Area Medical comes to Wise, Virginia

Travis Wilson has his teeth cleaned by Abingdon Dentist Sharon Kennedy as his daughter, Kamryn Wilson,8, looks on during the Remote Area Medical Clinic in Wise, Virginia on Friday.  The Wilson family including Kaden, brother, arrived at the RAM Clinic early on Thursday, to make sure they could all get dental work done.  The family is from Richlands, Virginia.  Kennedy is part of the Mission of Mercy clinic which is part of the Virginia Dental Assoc.

Walking and Riding in the Rain

Danika Hendricks, 5, walks briskly across the small dam at Steele Creek Park in the rain on Wednesday.  Hendricks family is from Erwin, Tennessee and was riding bikes around the park.  Danika just started riding without training wheels and was having a hard time keeping up in the rain and humidity.

Shooting in Bristol, Va

Bristol Virginia Police Department SWAT armored truck prepares to help the Washington County Virginia Sheriff's Department on Tuesday.  The home owner, seen outside the house, was hold up in his house after a welfare check by the Sheriff's dept.  Dennis Morrell, who held family members for a short while, was later shot and died at Bristol Regional Medical Center.  The Virginia State Police are in charge of the investigation.
